Watering Wisdom: How (and When) to Water in Summer Heat

Help solve one of the season’s biggest problems—over or underwatering.

Summer brings sunshine, long days, and an explosion of growth in the garden—but it also brings heatwaves and droughts that challenge even the most experienced gardeners. One of the most common mistakes? Overwatering or underwatering. At Bayview Garden Nurseries, we’re here to take the guesswork out of watering with a few smart strategies that keep your plants thriving all summer long.

🌞 Morning is Best

The golden rule? Water early in the morning. This gives plants time to absorb moisture before the sun gets too strong and minimizes evaporation. Evening watering can invite fungal diseases as moisture lingers overnight.

💧 Deep, Infrequent Watering

Rather than a quick daily splash, aim for a deep soak two to three times per week. This encourages roots to grow deeper, making your plants more drought-resistant and less dependent on frequent watering.

🌱 Know Your Plants

Not all plants are created equal!

  • New plantings and containers may need water daily.

  • Established perennials and shrubs usually need less frequent attention.

  • Lawns generally thrive with 1″ of water per week (including rainfall).

Come by the nursery and ask our staff about the specific needs of your plants—we’re happy to help.

🌿 Use the Right Tools

Soaker hoses and drip irrigation systems deliver water directly to the roots—where it counts most. Adding mulch around your plants also helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool.

🧠 Check Before You Water

A simple finger test can save your plants: stick your finger a couple of inches into the soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to water. If it’s still damp, hold off.
