Late-Fall Perennial Division
How to Lift and Divide Daylilies, Hostas, and Irises Before Deep Winter
Late fall is an ideal time to divide mature perennials, giving them room to grow and rejuvenating your garden for next spring. Plants like daylilies, hostas, and irises can become crowded over time, competing for water and nutrients. Dividing them before winter dormancy not only improves their health but also gives you more plants to spread around your garden—or share with friends.
At Bayview Garden Nurseries, we recommend tackling this project before the ground freezes, when soil temperatures are still warm enough for new roots to establish.
Step 1: Lift Gently
Start by watering the area the day before dividing to soften the soil. Using a spade or garden fork, carefully lift the entire clump from the ground. Work around the perimeter to minimize root damage.
Step 2: Separate the Clumps
Shake off or rinse away excess soil to expose the roots. For daylilies and hostas, gently pull apart sections with at least three shoots and healthy roots. Irises divide best by cutting the rhizomes with a clean, sharp knife—discarding any soft or diseased pieces.
Step 3: Replant and Feed
Replant divisions at the same depth as the original plant, spacing them to allow for future growth. Backfill with enriched soil and water thoroughly to settle the roots. For best results, mix in Espoma® Bio-tone Starter Plus or Espoma® Bulb-tone at planting time. These organic plant foods encourage strong root growth and help new divisions establish quickly before the first frost.
Step 4: Mulch and Protect
Finish with a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to insulate roots and conserve moisture. This protection helps your divided plants overwinter successfully and ensures a strong start in spring.
Quick Takeaway
Dividing perennials in late fall keeps your garden vigorous, balanced, and beautiful year after year. With a little care—and the right soil nutrients from Espoma—you’ll enjoy healthier plants and fuller garden beds come spring.
